Re: Before Union Plaza
In Response To: Before Union Plaza ()

From My Memory. 3 were built By GM the loco was made by Electro Motive and the coaches were built by GM Bus division. It's failure was that it was underpowered and no traction. It had 1,200 HP. Standard at the time was over 2,000 but the theory was that using Bus bodies it would be much lighter and the performance would return. Bad move. Only the front truck was powered ( 2 Axles ) The rear axle was unpowered.

2 Demonstrator Aerotrains were built with 1001 spending several month's in 1956 leased to New York Centeral and operating Clevland-Chicago Revenue Schedules. Late in 1956 1001 made tests on the Santa Fe then operated as the UP City of Las Vegas in the Summer of 1957.

Demonstrator 1000 operated New York Pittsburg revenue schedules on the Pennsylvania RR in 1957. Both were returned to EMD in 1957 and were Later sold to the Rock Island RR as RI #'s 2 and 3. The other Aerotrain-type unit was RI #1, Built origionally to Power RI's Talgo Jet Rocket. The Talgo and the 2 Aerotrains ended their Days. in Chicago Commuter service. In 1966 Rock Island donated 1 Aerotrain Each with Locomotives to the Museums in Green Bay, WI And St Louis, MO Having Scrapped #1 and the Talgo Cars.

P.S. Talgo is a Spanish ( I believe ) coach builder. Talgo Cars are currently in use in Washington State.
