Mark, it has been my experience that Hot August Nights is the toughest time to navigate your way around town. It will be crowded during the Air Races, but probably not overwhelmingly so.

As for the trip to Crystal Bay, go for it - it shouldn't be a problem. Take Mount Rose Highway south of Reno and you'll drive right past the Christmas Tree. Crystal Bay and Incline Village are another 20 minutes or so farther. It's a beautiful drive and shouldn't be very crowded in September.
