Why is that Jim?
In Response To: My personal opinion is... sad ()

Look down to the bottom. I had been ready to pay $15000 over which is what I felt was due. They dug the hole.

Perhaps there is some additional info which might make my feelings towards the tax man a bit clearer.

When they first wrote to me, they did so in the form of a standard letter. As a CPA, I have seen these letters many times before. The letter I had been sent had been altered to state that this was 'a standard periodical review' and not a specific investigation. I learned later that this investigation had actually started after a competitor had turned me in.

I went along to the tax office to voluntarily talk to them about their initial questions. They made me wait for 3 hours. During this time, they obtained a search warrant and turned up at my house with 3 police cars (sirens blazing) and 8 (YES EIGHT) police officers to help enforce the warrant. My wife was alone with our one year old daughter.

Part of the reason we moved house was the embarrasment that this had caused the family in the neighbourhood.

I had to go to court in order to get my computer and stock returned. Luckily the IRS were ordered to pay all costs.

After this was over I attempted to sue the person that had turned me in. After spending some $35,000 in legal fees in the civil courts the person left the country and has not been traced.

I think your comments about personal ethics are out of line.
