NCR: Vegas information requested from locals

Next week I will be moving to Las Vegas. Current plan is to leave here (Upstate NY) on Thursday. I am driving my car and only taking what fits (I will have some stuff shipped later).

I just about have my apartment lined up and that should be resolved within the next day or two.

Once I arrive I will have some things which I need to take care of quickly and I figure some of you can provide me some time saving advice:

Please email me with any information you can offer.

1) Banking. Around here banking is a very competitive business most of the banks are offering fee free banking and many are giving out cash bonuses to open an account. All I need is a checking account without any fees, ATM access, and a Debit Card. Any recommendations as to which bank to go to? Are any of them offering bonuses to open basic accounts?

2) Furniture. I have sold off all my furniture (still trying to get rid of the craps table) and will have absolutely nothing when I get out there. I will be looking to furnish a one bedroom apartment. I am looking to keep the cost as low as possible but I don't want junk. Any recommendations for reasonably priced furniture stores (not second hand)?

3) Cell phone service. I use my cell phone as my only phone. I am currently using Sprint which works pretty well for me (though I hate their customer service). I would be inclined to stick with them if the service in Las Vegas is reasonably good. Does anyone out there use Sprint and do you have problems? What other carriers would you recommend?

4) Vet -- I have a cat who is coming with me. I would like to have some idea where to take her in an emergency. Any recommendation for a good vet (preferably with weekend hours).

5) Dentist -- I would like to find a dentist to get into a regular schedule of exams (My present dentist has kept me in pretty good shape these past few years and I'd like to stay that way). Anybody have someone they would recommend?

6) Mechanic -- Of course my extended warranty will run out shortly after arriving. Which means I can expect my car to fall to pieces within the next month or two . . . so where should I have it towed to when it breaks down?

Any other information which you think a new resident might need would be appreciated.
