My brother-in-law had the interesting observation that most of the horses, except Smarty Jones, were at better than 8 to 1. So, he figured, if you bet all of the other horses, and Smarty Jones lost, you would probably win something. I tried it at $3 per horse...and the rest is history. Birdsong came in at well over 8 to 1.
