Probably an urban legend ...
In Response To: Re: I'll shed a tear when... ()

... guys. See this article on the Snopes site:

http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pershing.htm

It states, in essence, that there has never been any confirmation that such a tactic was used by Gen. Pershing and reaches the conclusion that the truth of the claim is undetermined. The article also contains one reference to a document which attributes the tactic to a Colonel Alexander Rodgers. Given the otherwise highly professional conduct of their military careers, I think it extremely unlikely that either Gen. Pershing or Gen. Stilwell would have resorted to such tactics.

As for the "interrogation technique with the choppers in Vietnam" that Mike seems to think worked so well, to my knowledge (and based on some brief research today), there has never been documented confirmation that any such incident ever happened. If it did, however, I can only say that anyone who thinks that is an acceptable way for American soldiers to act understands neither proper military discipline nor personal morality or ethics. Furthermore, anyone who actually DID such a thing would be a war criminal, no better than those Muslims who have tortured and murdered Americans during the current war in Iraq.

There is neither excuse nor justification for the torture and murder of prisoners of war, no matter who does it, nor for what reason.
