I remember it was something like 200,000 - 230,000 to the pound just before they added 3 zero's, so it would have been about £250. At that time when our own inflation was higher than yours I think the £/$ was around 1.50.

Somewhere Ive got some of these different notes. I did my 'backpacking' a few years later than most (between 1985 and 1992) and thats the time most of the ridiculous notes existed. I retained one of each I could find all over eastern europe and then south america. This taxi driver in Rio offered me a bundle of old notes he had at home, with and without the various devaluation stamps. Something like 25 notes had an effective face value of 17p (30c). I gave him a couple of dollars!
