Kling tells us in Every Light Was On that ashtrays were an integeral part of Harrah's Club public relations. One of Harrah's flacks would cruise northern Nevada in a Harrah's rig handing out ashtrays and matches to all the motels and motor courts. This was a significant boost to the small budgets these places had and an opportunity for the Harrah's guy to point out that the Club wasn't competing for their rooms at the time like those big shots at the Golden or the Riverside.
