May be different in the UK but.......

We have an insurance company that deals specifically in 'collectibles'. They are H A Woods and co, a Lloyds subsidiary.

They offer comprehensive cover for fire, theft, personal accompanyment, in transit etc. The premium reduces according to any security (fire-safes or burglar alarm) you may have. Cost is approximately $1 per $500 of cover at replacement cost.

I was fortunate when it came to the safes. I know someone who works for a safe moving company and one of the major UK banks changed its old safes to new digital ones a few years ago. My friends company was contracted to remove and dispose of 500 safes. They charge approx $200 per safe, and most of the safes would have been melted down as there were far to many for the 're-conditioned' market. I therefore paid $200 each for 2 to be delivered to my garage rather than scrapped. They stand 52" high and are about 26" square. These are 'real' firesafes with 4" thick walls, certified that the inside temperature will not exceed 80 degrees when subjected to 1 hour at 3000 degrees.

The drawback is that they weigh 3/4 ton each and need to be placed on concrete or steel.

Usually these safes would cost $4000 new but the going rate for a reconditioned one is only about $750 including delivery and 'installation'
