I believe I read about this incident. They had a laser connected to the computer and it could sense the speed and position of the ball in the few rounds while bets could still be placed. Very small computer and they disguised it so it was not obvious what they were doing. Theoretically should work, although it can only improve the odds of a win, not predict the exact number to be hit.
