I use the term "obsolete"...

to mean that the chip is no longer their currently issued house chip. When they need to order a new rack, they no longer order this chip. That's my meaning behind the word, and we're very explicit about our use of it on 2Chippers.com. See the "note" link beside the "Obsolete" category in the left sidebar at www.2chippers.com.

I recognize that many people reserve the word for use only in regards to chips that have been de-commissioned or are no longer redeemable for one reason or another. I personally feel that this definition ignores a whole category of chips - those that are still redeemable at a casino but are no longer being issued. I'd love to see someone come up with a distinctive term for this category that is commonly adopted by the hobby as a whole. How about "uncurrent"? I think it'd end years of fruitless debate over whether a chip is "obsolete" or not.

Until such time, that Circus Circus chip (and any other such chip) will always be "obsolete" to me. grin
