Your post reminded of another true combat story from WWII... when Lee Marvin was wounded on Saipan, the man who hauled him back from the front lines so he could receive medical attention was Sgt. Robert Keeshan... that's Bob Keeshan, a.k.a. Captain Kangaroo - to whom Marvin often referred in later years as "the toughest man I ever knew." Lee told that story on "The Tonite Show" back in the 60s and Johnny Carson's mouth fell open in surprise.
