Re: Pan is short for Panguingue

Here is a definition:
Pan or Panguingue (pan-ginn'-gay) is a form of rummy played in some Nevada casinos and California poker clubs. The game is played using eight decks with all eights, nines and tens removed. One deck is stripped of one complete set of spades. There are 310 total cards in play. Aces are always low; there are no jokers.

I can remember watching them play Pan upstairs at Harold's Club back in the 60s - seems like there was a lot of dealing and discarding. I never learned the game and all those playing seemed like older folks - I guess it just went out of fashion. I suspect the tickets were for paying fees for playing time....
