I have to agree with you. The first chip show I attended in Vegas, I bought a $1.00 Goldrush chip. The dealer wanted $100 and I only had $50 left. He gave me his address and said to send a check when I could. I couldn't believe it. I would never have offered that much trust. That first chip show sure changed my perception of chip collectors.
