I get the feeling that the boosting of cars from the lot at Hollywood Park/and Casino is a common occurance. They have security watch towers, usually unmanned, and walking to and from your car, especially after dark, feels very risky. Security has told me that parking lot hold ups and vandalism is not uncommon. So the movie was probably pretty true to life.
