Some airlines will offer a reasonably inexpensive upgrade to first class the day of the trip. We did that flying Aeromexio to Cancuun for $50 per person. Delta also offered it on the last trip I took for $150. If you want to fly first class that really beats paying over twice the coach class fare and you may get preference if you are a big frequent flyer on their airline.
