Re: Is this ashtray from the same place?

Nice tray, Charles!! grin

Is it from the same place? Yes...but not necessarily the same time...

Honest John seems to have tried a few different business ventures. At the time of your ashtray, he had a newspaper center...at the time of Dick's chip, he had a casino...at the time of the 1969 (July) Las Vegas phone book, he had a liquor store. Some of these ventures overlapped....

1969 yellow pages ad:
Honest John's Liquor Store
Package Liquor - Beer Bar
Open 24 Hours
Credit Cards Honored
Check Cashing Service
Across from the Sahara Hotel
2444 Las Vegas Bl. South LV....384-3522
NOTE: this ad is found under "liquor stores" and under "casinos". Ditto for the 1973 phone book.

Coupons that we have (I've dated them to 1971):
This coupon good for
5 free lucky nickels
one free hot dog
must be 21 or over
Honest John's Casino
Hot Dog House•Gambling Casino•Liquor Store
Across from Sahara Hotel
Las Vegas, Nevada
Must be 21 or over
One per person

He had another location, downtown. I'd guess that the story of one is probably similar to the story of the other, though the downtown location apparently wouldn't have had chips...

From Art Anderson's book "Casinos and Their Ashtrays":
"Honest John's Casino
Located at 304 Ogden at the corner of 3rd Street in downtown Las Vegas. Open between 1961 and 1967 as a newsstand, Honest John's only had slot machines. Andrew Tompkins purchased the casino in 1964 and changed the name to Lady Luck in 1968. Until he could get new $1 slot tokens made, Tompkins used Honest John's tokens with a sticker on them that said Lady Luck."

If I'm not mistaken, Sahara Avenue used to be San Francisco Street...thus Francisco Square.
