Re: New Article - Use of Reference Books!

As an author I can say I agree! I have many mistakes in my book "The Official US Casino Chip Price Guide, 2nd edition". We did the best we could to make changes from the 1st to the 2nd. Some errors were repeated but Steve & I are perfectionists & went over the contents for many hours in proofing. Some errors recently pointed out were easily overlooked on chips I looked at 100 times! We have been fortunate many in this great hobby have come forward to point out listings that needed corrections or clarification.
I want to say that research is about the most enlightening part of doing a book. I just love the history- thats what got me into collecting all this when I was a teenager. I have made so many changes in my original notes it is unbelievable. This research is not always so easy. I have many dates for openings & closings to change that I have found through hours of digging into old papers, licenses, etc. Places where I could find the facts. I found many old clubs existed way before Fullers info. shows.
I appreciate constuctive criticism. We cant find all the mistakes & we surely dont know everything. I know a few on this chipboard that do though. Ha Ha.
If we don't get input & a chance to change some information that input may be lost forever if those that have facts dont speak up. And its not necessary that the info. be facts but good honest opinions.
We have found more chips that were attributed to Vegas that new facts have shown them not to be. Such as Log Cabin. Started in CA. possibly the chips were taken to Vegas. If we ever find out we can call them Vegas too but for now a note to attribute them to Vegas as they were when found will work & giving them a lower value.
If we know for sure a chip is Vegas it has a much stronger value than one that could be Vegas.
Another thing about writing books- you are never finished. It gets in you to make every correction & entry you can. I work daily on the next book that I hope to produce someday. If it never happens at least I have more info. than when I started. Much more.
