My guess is your scanner is designed to scan slides as well as other items. On my scanner there is a piece that snaps in and out to scan slides or other items. There is also a way to change the light. When you scan slides the light shines down from above, with other items it shines from below. So my suggestion is to check your instruction book and look at the part about scanning slides vs. other items and make sure you don't have it set up to scan slides.
