When you post a message and enter your name, email address and password (If you use one) a cookie is place on your computer with this information so everytime you come back to the board you will automatically be recognized and won't have to re-enter this information, Ocassionally though you may have to clear your browser's cache which usually will delete your cookies which means if you do this the next time you come onto the board you won't be recognized by the board and you will have to re-enter your information all over again. What most users usually do is re-enter their information and then post a blank message onto the board which tends to clutter up the board's messages. Whoever created the software which produces this BBS (Bulleting Board Service) has put in an option that allows users to enter information once by using the Set Preferences option this way users aren't required to post a message to be recognized by the board and thus preventing less clutter.

I hope this answers your question and I apologized for the long winded explanation but I didn't know how else to explain.
