The original plan was for Boyd to be one of two companies to build smaller casinos next to Steve Wynn's giant casino on the land given to him by the state. When MGM bought out Wynn and cancelled plans for their massive casino it left the door opened for Boyd along with partner MGM to expand the size of the Borgata.
