Could be Guineas. One Guinea = 21 shillings, with One Pound = 20 shillings. So One Guinea = 1 1/20 Pounds! No wonder we went for decimalisation (before I can remember!).

Guineas are still used when buying & selling racehorses, but that's about it, but have always had links with gambling, so could apply here.

Only my speculations, but makes sense (to me anyway!)
