AMERISTAR OFFERS LEWIS & CLARK
BICENTENNIALCOMMEMORATIVE CHIP

Council Bluffs, Iowa, April 29, 2003— In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition, Ameristar Casino Hotel will be issuing special limited edition gaming chips featuring images of the historic journey. Chips will be offered in five-dollar and 25-dollar denominations, and will be available Monday, May 5.
The five-dollar Lewis & Clark commemorative chip features an oil painting entitled “Lewis & Clark at the Three Forks.” This work was created in 1912 by Edgar S. Paxton, and is currently a mural at the Montana State Capital. The piece depicts Lewis & Clark at the headwaters of the Missouri River. The duo reached this landmark in July 1805. Here they were forced to choose between three rivers of roughly the same width and appearance, in order to find the one that would take them to the mountains. They chose the most westward-moving river, naming it the Jefferson River.
The twenty-five-dollar Lewis & Clark commemorative chip features a painting by Charles Fritz entitled “Winter Afternoon at Fort Mandan.” This work depicts Lewis & Clark at Fort Mandan during the winter of 1804-5. Fritz is known for his work depicting the landscape and life in the Rocky Mountain region. An accomplished artist, Fritz’ credits include three Best of Show awards at the C.M. Russell Museum, the placement
of a large work in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center through the Bill Weiss Purchase Award and the Lee Loeb Memorial Award for Landscape at the Salmagundi Club Exhibition in New York City. He is listed in “Who’s Who of the American West,” as well as “Who’s Who In America.” Fritz is currently producing a 50-piece exhibition on the Lewis & Clark Expedition that will tour to museum venues nationally.
“We have not customarily produced commemorative chips at Ameristar,” says Senior Vice President and General Manager Ed Fasulo, “yet this significant milestone seemed to warrant a special issue. We anticipate that the Lewis & Clark chip will be a favorite among chip collectors.”
The Lewis & Clark Bicentennial commemorative chips will be available at Ameristar Casino Council Bluffs at the check-cashing window. Chip quantities are limited. For more information, call Ameristar at (877-IM-A-STAR).
