Chip Collecting Way Back When

Thought that some of the newer collectors would like to see what chip collecting was like back before computers. The scan shows a sales page sent out by Bill Borland back in 1989. These pages were used even before his Blue Book was released, even though this one was sent out afterward. These pages show all of the information that you had to go on. Believe me, this was considered a lot of information back then. In order to trade with someone, I used to see an ad in the Club Magazine and send them a letter via snailmail (USPS) asking for their trade list. It would arrive about two weeks later. If it was typed that would be a big surprise as many trade lists were hand written, as were all of the ones that I sent out to people. Back then most chips were bought or traded sight unseen, occasionally you would get a black and white photocopy along with a trade list. The exciting part took place about 4 or 5 weeks after asking for the trade list when you received the chips in the mail. You would quickly open the package to see what your chips looked like. Sometimes you would be disappointed about the way they looked, darn another plain hot-stamp, or even more disappointed to realize that you already owned the same chip. Damn, I wish I had all of those duplicates back. Of course, these are just my recollections maybe others had different experiences. If you check out some of the prices back then you might be surprised to find out that we all didn't pickup old Vegas chips for pennies back before the collecting boom. We didn't have to worry about riverboats, Indian casinos, or even limited edition issues back then. You pretty much were limited to Nevada, California, Atlantic City, or the Caribbean. I know there were other areas but I didn't know about them back then. That's what makes me smile today when a chip is released in Vegas at 10:00am and I can see a picture of it by 10:30am and have one in my hands two or three days later from a new issue service without even doing a thing.
