Terry, It is not unusual for a news department....

to make a copy (of the broadcast version) available, so be sure to ask. If they are not helpful, talk to the Reporter, because a reporter also has access to a copy, especially if it's a good piece and he wants it for his portfolio, i.e., a video resume.

Be sure to accept whatever format they want to give you, which will likely be betacam or U-Matic. You can always have it converted to VHS or 8mm (depending on your home format) at a later date, but accept what they have because it will be recorded in the best quality.

No matter what, be sure to record it from TV, but that will be your worst case copy (except for the versions you duplicate from that copy for the family and friends), and perhaps your only copy. And to be real anal, have at least one family member of friend make a copy.

Lastly, record the entire program. Do not try to guess when the piece will air. Often time they will tantalize viewership by airing a bite in an earlier segment.
