In most people's eyes, it's the same card. There wouldn't have been a software change, just a format change (much like rearranging a Word document). The printers allow you to put the name, number, exp, etc. anywhere on the card just as easily as moving a field in a word processor. To me, what obviously happened is they got their new cards, didn't like how the older format looked on their new cards (white numbers too close to the white cards on the right), so they changed the layout of the print. Pretty common scenario when new designs are made, since the name/number may interfere with the printed image. I believe the general concensus is that this is not an official variation.
