NCR - Any coin collectors out there?

I think I remember that some of you collect coins also, so I thought I would ask this here.

I lost my grandmother on Christmas Eve, and my mother and I were going through her house beginning the process of preparing it for sale. Well we found a safe in her bedroom, and were able to find the key that opens it. What we found inside where coffee cans full of silver and copper coins. Probably a dozen or so. And we also found a sealed box full of silver coins. My grandmother never had or needed money or anything, so it was unusual to find money in there.

When we opened the sealed box we found a sealed bank bag in it. On the bag it had a tag that read something like this, "$1000 face value, 90% half dollars" dated 1971. Then when we opened the bag we started looking through the coins. All were pretty old. My mother even found some from the 1800s

What my question is, since I am not a coin collector, could any of you that do, give an Okie some advice. Is it worth us investigating the value of the coins from a collectors point of view or would it be better to take the coins and just have them counted and exchanged.

I mean there are thousands and thousands of these coins between the cans and the bank bags, but if it not worth the hassle I would just advise my mother to have them exchanged out.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks
