Since they are back striker matches, I doubt very much they were made in 1954. There are front strikers with the poker matches though; date to the 1960's and early 1970's. Maybe even the 1950's though I don't have one I know is that old. I'd bet the '54 on your matches is the date the idea was copyrighted.
