I have a OLD spare computer at work for this type of thing. I keep it set up with McAfee. If Norton will not clean it, I put the infected drive in this computer as a 2nd drive. I then scan the drive and either clean it or delete the infected file.

I have had a very good success rate so far. Other than this one PC, I use Norton exclusively. It has provided excellent protection of our computers. We hit one or 2 viruses a month. Our E-mail is scanned on the Exchange Mail Server before we see it. Because of this, most of the ones I see come from infected IIS web sites that haven’t installed a Microsoft patch that was released over a year ago.
Most of the virus infected hard drives that I have repaired is from someone’s home computer. In the last 2 years I have only had one that actually infected a work computer. It was infected 2 days before the new detection files were released. Most home users don’t worry about the viruses until after they are infected. It is quite a bit harder to take care of the problem then.

Spend the money on a virus program! You can buy Norton for $5.00 Buy it install it and make SURE it is updating. If you are not updating the definition files, you are not protected. Symantec (Norton) has released a new definition file the last 8 consecutive business days. The Live update files are very easy to install. They are usually updated 1-2 times a week. The intelligent update files are a bit harder to install. The Live Update should be fine for most users. I update with every new release at work. I update my 150 computers and 4 servers with about 5 minutes of my time. At home I let it automatically update. Hope this helps!
