Databases & scanning questions

When I read about you guys with these mega-databases, killer webpages and all of your chips in there, I begin to wonder if I'm missing something. I know building a database is a major project in itself, but how do you ever find the time to scan images of all of your chips? My scanner is so slow when scanning at higher resolutions that I sometimes sit and read a book while it scans. Do I need to update my scanner? I suppose the better way to do it would be lay a bunch of chips on the bed, scan one huge image and then cut and save individual chips. What resolution do most of you use when scanning for your chips for your database? Do you scan with a high resolution and then reduce the size?
