High Charges?
In Response To: Q: buyer paying Paypal fees? ()

As a Ebay seller (and buyer), I can understand the logic, although I do not charge supplements myself.

Based in the UK, I accept the paypal charges as this is the way the majority of US buyers pay me, but I have had to stop taking International Money Orders as my bank (as do all of them as far as I can tell) charge £5 (approx $8) to change them. I didn't realise this until I accepted an IMO for $6 which is now basically worthless to me (perhaps I can list it on Ebay as a collectible??). Unfortunately (and maybe someone can help me here) I cannot find any method of payment from the US to the UK apart from cash that has no charge attached.

With regards credit cards, the law here allows companies to add a surcharge for the use of credit cards to cover the charge levied by the card company, and I believe this is the same in many countries. The only companies here that tend to make use of this are travel and ticket agents and some mail order companies, presumably because their margins are so low. Although this does seem unfair to some, I would argue that the High Street retailers, including all food retailers, that add the charge into their costs and charge everyone the same are therefore increasing the costs to users of cash and cheques. It is also true, that cheques are much more widely used in the UK than I believe they are in the US (we have guarantee cards that prevent cheques being dishonoured, even when there are no funds avaialble - not sure if that's the same in the US) which means these people end up paying hidden charges to cover credit card fees even when they don't use a credit card.

End of lecture! Jason.
