In Response To: Re: Tu Hablas Espanol? ()

I will tell you my "yo hablo espanol" story. I will set up what happened in English. See... when moving to Arizona, and because I had taken 4 years of Spanish in school, I thought I knew a lot. However, I worked at a store that sold steros and realized how little I knew!! vbg

A young man came into the store and bought a stereo. When I explained (in spanish) that stereo came in 5 boxes, he looked concerned. See... he had taken the bus to the mall and was unsure if he could get the stereo home.

Using my Castilian high school Spanish, I asked: "¿Tiene un coche?" "Do you have a car?
Suprised, he looked at me and answered: No... no tengo. ¿y usted?" "No I don't. Do you?
Now, being 19 years old... I was worried he wanted a ride and common sense told me that even 20 years ago, young women didn't drive strangers home), so I replied: Si, para es a mi casa." "Yes, but it's at home."

The man left - LAUGHING hyterically - I never did find out how he got the stereo home.
I asked my girlfriend WHAT I had said that was so funny... she told me:
"Jill... In the Arizonan dialect, you asked that guy if he had a PIG!
He said, NO - do YOU??
And you said, Yes, but it's at home."

We all got a good laugh and I NEVER used my HS spanish again! rofl
Just a little example what happens in different parts of the world!!
