You don't have to convince me about some of the oldtimers. I've talked to many Strip property pointholders living down here in Florida who also ran clubs in the South and Midwest who can recall every detail of every operation they were involved in and yet have no idea what their own chips looked like.... and they can rattle off phone numbers of distributors from the 40s and 50s without any problem.
I've done some reasearch in Palm Beach and talked with players who played at the Beach Club each season for years who can't even remember what the Pearl, Ivory and Clay chips looked liked (okay, some of these folks were close to 100-years-old, yet they still remember the eye color and bust size of the women they played with (yes, women played the tables, too; a few of them had pictures).
Would you believe there's a California chip dealer who still believes the Floridian chips are from a cruise line.... ?
