A tricky math problem (NCR)

My daughter hit me with this one when I got home tonight. It’ll make you think for a while (if you haven’t seen it already, of course)…

Three guys want to stay in a hotel but they don’t have enough money to each get their own room. They decide to pool their money and share the $30 cost. They each contribute $10.

The manager, meanwhile, remembers that they qualify for a $5 discount and sends the bellboy up to the room with 5 singles.

The bellboy, figuring that he can’t evenly split the 5 singles, decides to pocket 2 of them. He knocks on the door and hands each of the guys a $1 bill.

So, to recap… each of the guys has paid $9 for the room, a total of $27, and the bellboy has pocketed $2, making $29.

What happened to the extra dollar?
