Re: Collecting Slot Machine Backglass

From reading the posts here, while they may be correct, I find it hard to believe a few things that were mentioned. The problems could be with people interpreting policies or laws or whatever. I don't doubt though that people did hear what they heard.

What I find to be hard to believe is that 1.) the glass has to be returned to 20th CF or whomever. -- As long as people are not illegally reproducing the artwork I don't think FOX would care. The art has been paid for. 2.) The glass must be destroyed. -- WHY? That just doesn't make sense. May just be that someone wants these things to appear more rare and hard to come by so that they can move in and sell a rare piece of glass that is illegal or impossible to obtain. I have heard that gaming regulations require that blackjack and other gaming felts must be destroyed burned or shredded when removed from a table. One night while playing in LV at 4am the floorperson closed our table and the whole pit to change a bunch of felts. We asked if we could have a couple of them as souveniers. He said, "don't know let me check" After talking to the upholsterers, he came back and said, "Sure, they will have some for you in a bit." 3.) that it is illegal to sell them unless you are a gambling establishment. I think this may be someones cautious misinterperatation of the law. It might be that IGT simply doesn't sell to individuals and due to the varying laws around the country they won't or believe it is illegal to sell parts to a current machine that might be illegal in some states. I know here in Illinois, it is illegal to own or have a machine that is less than 25yrs old. Therefore, the source at IGT may be interpreting that it might be illegal to sell this as it is a part to a machine that would be illegal in some jurisdictions.

In any case, I think the real problem is that the glass in question is being used in some very popular current machines and the artwork is just not available right now. As some of these machines start to get retired in surplus quantities you may start finding some of the glass available. Right now though, when they switch the machine architecture from one game to another, or one denomination or variation to another, the glass and other art etc. is probably being saved as spare parts for the quantities of machines that are still being operated in inventory. The companies that sell and maintian machines are probably holding on to them in case their customers need something.

As for the glass in general, there are a lot of people selling them on eBay. I got a Triple Diamond one a couple years ago. Paid about $45 for it. I thought it was unusual and interesting since it was from a $25 machine as can be seen with the $50 payout for 1 coin played and a single TD logo. I assume that is a 1-1 payout. My glass is a plastic application on a real piece of glass. I have heard that sometimes they apply the artwork on Plexiglass as well. If you really want one of the fancy new pieces, I would just keep an eye out at the sources that were mentioned. You never know when one will turn up. Maybe check with the dealers that sell or service the machines. When some are returned for exchange or trade on new ones they probably recondition the old machines to resell. They may end up with extra parts. In fact, if I recall, the person I got my glass from was such a dealer. I seem to recall that he took old machines from casinos and reconditioned them for use in other places. I assume my glass was available because he may have been changing a $25 machine to a $1 machine and had the extra glass.
