I've noticed the different colors are apparently randomly distributed. It would appear to be a process variation and I wouldn't consider these collectible varieties. It's possible the inlay absorbs some liquid from the clay and turns darker when molded.

You find a similar situation on the Barbary coast chips which are made the same way.
