Question for JB:

In English we use the term "token" to mean an item that symobolizes or acts in place of another thing (often an intangible). That is why we might give someone a token of our appreciation (or affection depending on just how much you appreciate them).

So it obviously makes sense to me that a casino chip is a token as it represents cash. That is why I agree with you that in the generic sense of the word a chip or check is a token.

However you keep saying that the word Jeton is a translation for the word token. This is where what I call the myth or fallacy of translation comes into play.

So my question to you (as I can speak no other language) is does the word Jeton only refer to a gambling chip or gambling token? Or does it translate to the generic word? In other words would a French person receive a jeton of our appreciation?
