Hi-on my HP scanner...after the scan is done, and it is displayed, it gives me the choice to "output to": which IU have set to adobe home photoshop.
It also automatically selects the type of scan. You can change this in what the scanner program says is optional adjustments. If my scan doesn t look the way i want (usually the case with chips) i check that out put type. It lists the choices as:

Black & White Drawing
Black and White photograph
Color Drawing
Normal Color Photograph
Best Color Photgraph

Often it will be at color drawinf and i will change it to either color photograph or best color photograph and it is amazing the difference. I dont kow if your HP software is the same...but thats how mine is.

Also, I use Adobe to adjust the size and to trim the scan as well as to then export the scan to .JPG file. Hope this helped and didnt confuse you even more.
