PC Upgrades

Don't skimp on memory on your new motherboard, Mike. I found 256MB of RAM at Costco last month for $40, and you get a $10 mail in rebate!! Might as well max it out at 512MB.

I bought an Intel motherboard when I upgraded about 9 months ago. Very good price at our local Fry's Electronics. Has integrated LAN interface, audio, video, USB,.... everything but a modem, which is all I have plugged into it. Mine is model D815EEA. I think there is also a D815EEA2 which doesn't have the LAN interface. I use an Intel Celeron 700 MHz processor, which is considerably less expensive than the Pentium but has plenty of performance for us common users.

Even though I build my own PC box, I tend to go with name brand parts. Intel, Hewlett Packard, ViewSonic, etc. Costs very little more and you get support when you need it.

I also recommend the Microsoft optical mouse with the roller wheel for scrolling. Don't know how I got along without the scroll wheel and the extra buttons on the sides for "back" and "forward" when on the web. Since there's no rubber ball, it never skips or binds up when moving on the pad either. About $35.
