Of DICE and Whisk(e)y...

I happened to be in a Restoration Hardware store in Palo Alto, CA (Stanfurd's Home), and noticed that they are selling a re-make of a home craps game. It's a re-print of a not-too fancy home felt, in a box... Well, right next to the display was a large bucket full of dice, priced at .75 each. After going through the entire bucket, I came up with 5 matching Circus Circus Reno, 3 Binion's Horseshoe Club - Vegas, 2 Casino de Mallorca's w/bizarre "target-style" dots, and 1 each for the Plaza and Hotel Showboat Casino, both from Vegas. There were some weird ones in that bucket that I don't collect - one had the "1" dot way mis-centered, one had a "5" written on the side where five dots were missing, and so forth. There were also many no-name dice that had a letter on the inside surface of the "1" spot, but since there was no "i" I decided to pass on trying to spell "Keith"; all the other letters were there... The checkout lady seemed generous, and bought my explanation that they really should be sold in pairs; so I ended up paying .75 per pair (instead of each)...

Also of note, if you like whisk(e)y, or have friends that do, go to the back of their store where the clearance items are. You will find (among other great 50-75% mark-downs) perhaps the best whiskey reference book I've ever seen, marked down from $25 to $9.99. Look through the stack and find one that isn't scratched up. There is a link to their site, once there just click the "Sale" logo in the lower right, and tab through the items... The website lists the book at $14.95, but the store has sold me 3 of them on different visits for $9.99, perhaps if you ask the website will honor the $9.99 price... Christmas just came early!
