C&J mold question - Jim Blanchard
In Response To: Playboy-London C&J chips ()

A question for Jim Blanchard, if he reads this, or for other C&J mold collectors...

I have noticed on the Playboy-London C&J chips, and many other C&J chips in my collection, that the inserts are almost always nicely aligned such that the obverse inserts are at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock; the reverse inserts are spaced at 2, 6 and 10 o'clock. Also, the inlays are "coin aligned" with each other, such that the bottom of one side corresponds to the top of the reverse side.

(Today's Paulson H&C's generally have no specific alignment between inserts & inlay and no alignment between inlays on each side.)

Did the manufacturing process for C&J inlay chips at the Burt Co. intentionally involved nicely aligning the inserts and inlays? Was this a process done by machine or by hand? I'm just guessing that the employees placing the inlays just took the care and time to orient the inlays nicely. (Note that the inlay placement isn't always exactly on the mark, as on the 5-pound chip, but it's normally very close on most C&J chips I've seen.)

Just wondering.
