Re: Flamingo Signage
In Response To: Re: Quite right, Alex! ()

The original signage of the Flamingo when it opened in 1946 was a vertical sign that read"Flamingo" from the F on top, downwards, with the bent over Flamingo bird in neon, perched atop the sign. The famous script usage of the word Flamingo was incorporated on the sign that read "Hotel Flamingo" in front of the small lake along side Hwy 91 at the front of the hotel drive.

I agree the tower was erected in 1953 during the remodel, but I think it lasted into the mid to late 60's. First reason is the one of the original photos hanging in my office. The photo clearly shows the champagne tower from the air and most all the cars in the photo are early to mid 60's vintage. Secondly, the tower is in a couple of shots during the film Viva Las Vegas filmed at the Flamingo in the 60's. I have the exact date of the removal of the tower in book at the house and will post it once I find it.

I have over a dozen photos of the Flamingo from the original construction stages to the 60's photos of the champagne tower hanging in my office. One shows snow covering the entire grounds of the pool area with Bugsy's suite as the backdrop!

I received these photos from Jim Gellette years ago and think of him every time I look at these wonderful old photos. I hope he knew how much the photos and his friendship meant to me.
