Joe's Valente Club '46-'50's...
In Response To: Re: Bank Club, Pioche, Nv. ()

...from C/W's Official Guide. Wow, after looking through TCR, C/W's Official and Fuller's Index, it looks as if we've got several small operators perhaps, running clubs using chips they've used in other clubs and other states. Kind of like the case with the "CC" Chesterfield Club chips. They would buy and sell each other and move down the road a ways and run another club too. According to Fuller, some of the counties were a little more informal about P's and Q's and completed license paperwork and the sheriff would just kinda roll by and make sure all the fees were current, hence incomplete paper trails and addresses and dates. Several Pioche entries in Fuller's Index have ? instead of dates. Valente chips from Pioche ended up in Caliente down the road, both a fly speck of a town (bigger 'n Gerlach though!) Sounds like James Campiglia has had some success chasing some of this Pioche stuff down, digging up the chips of the era and talking with the principles. He found some Caliente Club dice being used for Yahtzee! Two other sources would be that ashtray book that's out there which contains a lot of unexpected casino info, and any notes Harvey Fuller might have about Pioche and the Valentes. Doug Saito's going to have Fuller's stuff available...in a few years! Sure would be great if you could put up a scan of that tray. Love that small town stuff.
