The Chip Board Archive 05

Small-Key, with a twist.

I think I may have commented on this mold on the board in the past. Previously I had seen it only on the Mapes Hotel chip from Reno. Recently, I noticed the $1 Cal Neva Lodge from Tahoe also has it, although the $5 from the same series does not.

Looks like a standard Small Greek Key, except the faces of the chip have concentric circles impressed into them. This is apparently the design on the flush surfaces of the mold, similar to the textured or linen-surfaces we see on many later chips of all molds. Since it is part of the mold, I think it really deserves mention as a distinct mold design.

However, with only two chips found like this, and lacking the need to distinguish from similar chips with the regular Small-Key mold, maybe a new mold id is unnecessary. At a minimum, I think a note in the description in TCR is called for.

I had shown the Mapes to Howdy a year or so ago and he agreed it was a distinct mold. What do TCR authors think?

Anyone have a different chip with this mold in their collection? These two chips (TCR N7330 and N5237) are both old ones, probably from the 1940's. The Mapes has the added distinction of being one of the few silk screened chip.
