Re: A long response..

James; You asked; "What can be done though if no one wants to accept anything in our club/hobby?"

Good question. I agree that some sort of descriptive terms must be utilized to describe the condition of chips when placing them up for sale... either on ebay; Jackpot Auctions; private websites; or in the club auction. I simply question the accuracy of a numerical system that has such a wide-spread of numbers that are arbitrarily picked out of the blue in most cases with no guidelines for others to determine how such a numerical grade was arrived at.

But let's stay with the subject at hand... just for discussion purposes. Do YOU think that the chip being described that led off this thread as being a "95 out of 100" was an accurate portrayal of that particular chip's condition? The seller says that he was using HIS numerical system, not C&W's. This is the problem Jim, as I see it. There seems to be NO standard. My personal preference leans toward an accurate adjectival description, describing condition and defects... not a numerical point system... and especially not a 70 or a 100 point system for grading casino chips.

As for the club auction. Every single one of the auction lots were on display for viewing during the hours of the show prior to the actual sale. They were also there in the locked display cases during dealer set-up, prior to the public being allowed access to the floor. I know that you were an active bidder in the auction .... as were several other dealers. I and many other club members appreciate your active support in these annual events. You are one of the key valuable players who make the market what it is today on higher priced material. Without purchasers such as yourself, collectors would not have the convenience of disposing of duplicates or better portions of their collections when it comes time to sell.

I don't have all the answers James. All I know is what I see. Sometimes I don't like what I see developing and I express myself accordingly. I believe that more folks ought to candidly express their thoughts also. I appreciate your taking the time to post yours.

Perhaps the new club officers would consider appointing an eight or ten member committee comprised of dealers and collectors to come up with a proposed compromised grading system that would address all of our concerns. Perhaps such a preliminary report could be prepared and delivered at next year's convention of a constructive grading system that would have the eventual potential stamp of approval of CC & GTCC. Even then, I'm sure that there will always be those who will disagree with any grade assigned to any given chip...., but it would be a start.
