Katie,

Your "hair pulling" experience is practically shared by so many other collectors but you got to do it sooner or later. Sooner is better to avoid multiple duplicates.

You can use the software Checkmate or any other(I don't use it). I use MS Word and the chips are in the album in the order of the catalogue listings.

But I think the way to go is to create a webpage in your own hard drive that you can access anytime if you don't want to log on and pay the monthly fee of the web. Each particular and individual chip list can be "link" or "hyperlink" to the scan of the chip. Everytime you add, delete or change anything make sure you create a backup to your CD for safekeeping.

There are so many models that you can look at and see which fits your needs.

Patience and more patience. Very challenging than researching, writing and defending your THESIS. Huuuh.
