I believe you would get your local operator and request a long distance operator; who would obtain the operator in Nevada; who in turn would dial 5100.
Since I was born in November of 1944 I would have been only four years old when the Thunderbird opened and had these matches for smokers. Anyway, I believe that's how it worked back in 1948. Best, Jim
