Restoring cancelled chips

I don't know of anyone selling 'decancelled' chips as original-issue chips. The ones offered by those removing cancels all seem to be reasonably priced, considering that the chips are no longer available in quantity from the manufacturer and that it does take some effort to do the restoration. I consider $4-10 a chip to be reasonable.

The risk is that in the secondary market, a buyer may offer one of these chips as an uncancelled specimen at a high price. There are some unusually high denomination chips involved in the riverboat and indian casinos who have cancelled chips out there. I can see a chipper paying $100 for a $1000 chip that appears to be in original condition. That's all I'm warning about.

When the cancel is removed along with the clear-plastic into which it was impressed, the inlay pattern is clearly visible. If a new layer of plastic is added by spraying or brushing on a coating, it's very difficult to tell from a new chip. You must look for the surface texture to match the rest of the chip. Many collectors, particularly beginners, don't know about the pebbled surface of new chips and may just assume it's worn smooth.

This is not a major problem at this point, but one of many aspects of the hobby you need to be aware of if you're going to buy expensive chips.

Recent series I'm aware of are Argosy Gaming, River City New Orleans (both boats), Crown Casino. I've sold all these series myself, both at shows and on eBay. I think they are great looking chips and an opportunity to put an example in your collection you'd never find in original condition.

Of course, there are the earlier Nevada cancelled chips that we all know about, but I've never seen (or recognized, anyway) one of these cleaned to the inlay and resurfaced. Holiday Casino LV, Monte Carlo Reno, Cstaways LV come to mind.
