CLUB 30 INFORMATION

The seller of the CHARLEVIOX chips [see earlier post] provided some additional information about another club in her family--the CLUB 30. I have a CLUB 30 chip that someone attributed to Butte, MT. Here is what she said:

My paternal grandmother was from Iron Mountain, Michigan. But my maternal
grandfather Hen was from Carnegie, PA. My mom gets mad when I say that he
was in the Irish mob or the rackets. But he was, apparently. A lovely man
who was generous to a fault, but who gambled all his money away. Didn't
smoke or drink, but the horses. Whoa!
At one time, my great uncle took off with $200,000 of his money and it
didn't hurt him. This was in the 40s I believe. I never met this great
uncle and apparently he died a pauper.

Hen had a club on the infamous Route 30 in West Virginia. It was called
Club 30. Dean Martin (who was from Steubenville, Ohio...right across the
Ohio River) worked as a dealer there. In fact, in Dino's autobiography, he
mentions my grandfather. The upstairs of the club was dining and the
downstairs was gambling. I think that they had dancing too because I've
heard numberous stories of famous Pittburghers who went there to dance. Now
I believe there is a trailer park in the location.

Years ago, my dad who trashed everything, threw away all the Club 30 china.
I do have a couple of pieces left that I treasure and the pieces will
never leave my possession.

There are no grandchildren in my family of 4 siblings and no one to leave
anything to so I have been letting a few things go. I had no idea of the
value of these chips; I thought I would get a good price though. I assumed
that they were old, but I thought 30s possibly. But it doesn't surprise me.

So even though Granddad gambled away all his money, my inheritance from him,
I suppose, is a lot of great stuff. Plus a lot of love.
