I have never noticed this. So, I just gave it a try, posting a test message. When it took me back all my "new" indicators were still there.

The "new" indicators are added depending on certain rules for the date and time of your cookie.

Don't know why yours disappeared and mine didn't, but will try to figure it out. I do know one thing. The board software works the same way for every person. It is the browser software and the way each persons computer is set up that makes the experience different for each person.
